I have been a loyal registered nurse with Blount Memorial for almost 10 years on the same unit. One reason I chose to work at Blount is because my mother was born and adopted at the facility in 1966! It has always held a special place in my heart because without her there would be no me! Secondly, my very first hospital clinicals were completed at Blount and I just remember every one being so caring and kind and thought what a great environment to work. I started my very first nursing job at Blount with orientation of taking on a maximum of 6 patients and within 2 weeks of getting off orientation we started having to take 10 patients. I was scared to death not knowing if I could give my best care to each patient but somehow I managed! I learned that my number one skill became time management. I don't think I ever had a patient say they felt forgotten by me and that made me feel so accomplished! I love working with patients who come in with a goal in mind...leaving better than they were. As a post-op nurse it was great to see these patients achieve their goal and to know I had a hand in helping them makes my heart so full! I have always wanted to be a Labor and Delivery nurse but was never given the opportunity since our clinical hospital was shutting down their L&D unit. I was once asked why I would want to do labor and delivery because even though it's mostly happy times there is the chance of a sad moment and my response was, "yes I know but even in sad moments I want to be there for my patient through it all, I will be a shoulder to cry on if needed, I will be an open ear to listen to their worries, I will be their friend and voice if wanted, and I hope to leave my mark on them happy or sad! If you were in a bad situation wouldn't you want to feel seen and safe and like everything will be okay in the end?". I have always been a "home body" and once I am familiar with somewhere I don't want to leave it but I just don't feel appreciated or safe at my current position anymore which is why I am trying to find a new "home".
