Kugan began his banking career at ABN AMRO Bank’s (Royal Bank of Scotland) treasury in Back Office operations, Middle Office, and trading, he later joined Gensec Merchant Bank operations and later a Bond Trader. He later joined Nedbank Capital as Treasury specialist for Capital & Money Markets Operations consulting on the BOE – Nedbank Merger.

Kugan then had the opportunity to work on one the largest mergers in South Africa focusing on consolidating Technology and Operations streams for the Barclays and ABSA Merger which through this process took the position of Regional Head/Director for the Financial Institutions Group at Barclays/Absa Capital a leading Investment Bank in SA. During his role at Barclays, he traveled internationally representing the Financial Institutions Group originating transactions for Barclays and Absa Group. He also attended and actively participated at the SIBOS, and SWIFT conferences internationally representing the bank meeting with Executive Directors/CEOs to establish international business relations and discussing business proposals for front office business, technology, and operations.


Kugan spent four years at Standard Bank executing the Transactional Products & Services strategy for CIB Technology and Operations in Africa, later in 2014, Kugan joined Standard Bank Africa Regions leading Operations and Technology domain establishing the bank in New Markets, executing the Digital Transformation Strategy for Digital Channels including the Go to Market Strategy driving Commercialization for the Retail, Business & Commercial Banking segments on the African continent.


Kugan currently is the Head: Digital Platforms for Standard Bank Group: Africa Regions. He is also an active member of the Association of Black Securities and Investment Professionals in South Africa for the past 18 years and has an established network in the local and international financial institutions industry including the SARB and DTI institutions globally

· Maintain alignment with other segment heads in order to ensure excellent client proposition delivery and reduction of duplication across segments.

· Drive scale and usage of relevant digital assets and eCommerce platform when relevant and value-adding to a client life journey.

· Partner with Group and Engineering,managing digital assets, from an experience (both developer and customers) and eCommerce perspective, defines the digital customer experience (CX); digital analytics; always on, always secure, DevOps and digital content strategy, as these contribute to, and have an impact on, the success of the digital and eCommerce capability and strategy.

· Ensure that the adoption of digital and engineering functionalities meets customer objectives through solution readiness capabilities.

· Stay abreast of market and competitive developments in order to define and evolve innovative and value-added services to clients across all segments.


Risk, Regulatory & Compliance

· Execute the parameters for the key trade off decisions at client level (i.e. risk appetite, pricing etc.).

· Review audits ensuring that there are no unsatisfactory findings relating to operational losses.

· Define the Digital country Risk framework and appetite in alignment with segment, country and Risk objectives ensuring first line risk accountabilities for digital and ecommerce are carried out

Strategy

· Track and report on adoption of the strategy and provides feedback to various domains and capabilities.

· Develop an appropriate platform DevOps (Always On), Always secure and platform as a service strategy.

· Ensure the platforms, methods, team topology and architecture support a low time to market for all teams deploying digitally (lead time from idea to in the hands of customers)

· Guide countries to build relevant features on digital platforms and build them where platforms sit centrally, based on DVF (desirability, viability and feasibility frameworks)

· Provide input to Client Solutions / Client Segment for the build and definition of new and enhanced features and digital products

· Guide Always On and Always Secure in conjunction with Engineering (mean time to recover; mean time between outages; client and bank risk losses)

· Provide client experience standards and methodologies for digital platforms

· Drive adoption of digital platforms with the Client Coverage, marketing, digital and ecommerce teams (% of clients digitally active)

· Host and support countries to build digital product management skills
